YOUR MARRIAGE PHILOSOPHY

Rom 12:2

And be not conformed to this world:but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (KJV/ESV)

Yesterday, we learnt that everything man is involved with in life is run by philosophies and that the philosophies in your life will determine the results you get in life. That means, the philosophies by which you operate your marriage will determine the results in your marriage. In other words, the outcome and experiences of your marriage is largely a product of something within your control, i.e something inside more than the externalities. Therefore, remedies to issues in marriage is not just prayer but knowledge. In fact, only by good knowledge will you pray the right prayers.

We have heard, time and again that the practice of this day is high expectation in marriage with low preparation for marriage. One major factor for that low preparation is low information or wrong information. And when you will not prepare especially in the area of the philosophies that will guide your operations in marriage, you will definitely violate the holy instruction - "be not conformed to this world".

Today, lets examine the following philosophies.

1. MARRIAGE IS FIRST FOR PROCREATION.

We have heard this statement over and over again in marriage seminars. As much as procreation is one of the activities and expectations in marriage, it doesn't make it a major purpose. This is clearly a violation of the law of purpose in marriage as seen in Gen 2:18. When God first mentioned the purpose for creating a woman for man, He called it an help meet for him that is to say an help suitable for him. He didn't call her a baby factory. This means that the first that qualifies a man to look for a wife is that he has found his life work and then needs an helper. Not that, he has reached the age to have children and then he looks for a baby factory. Little wonder why you find this day that in some places, the man will first get the woman pregnant to test that she is fertile before he marries her. That's clearly wrong. Drop that philosophy.

2. MARRIAGE IS 50 - 50

Have you ever heard that statement before? They say marriage is 50 - 50 and I've even read it being said that marriage is somebody given up all of himself to become half of the other partner. In fact, you have heard the term "my better half", some of you may have referred to your spouse as that and may even still do. Interesting, but that philosophy is not anywhere in the bible. Marriage is not two half incomplete people coming together but two whole persons coming together to become something bigger than the both of them could have become on their own. That is to say the scriptural equation of marriage is 0-100. I give up my all to become half of something bigger than both of us. The bible said it this way How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had shut them up? Deut. 32:20

Watch this equation. 1=1000, 2= 10,000 10,000/2 = 5000. Now 1 correctly married= 5000.

This simply means when you are correctly married, you are yoked with Christ, you become what the bible calls "a threefold cord" not a "twofold cord". Eccl 4:12. There is somebody else in the equation that makes you to become far better than you were as an UNMARRIED man. So He said give your all in him. When you go with 50-50, please excuse me, where do you put the other 50. Is this other 50 that gives room for adultery, unfaithfulness, infidelity, selfishness, strife and bitterness in your home.

Marriage is not a negotiation, it is a covenant. Covenant is not a light thing to joke with. Honor it and you'll be honored. Give yourself totally in Christ to your marriage and you'll become far better than you could have ever imagined.
